Pepper Sprays – Types and Use

How’s this for protecting an ATM machine! One South African bank, has outfitted a few of its cash machines with pepper sprays to guard against criminals tampering with the machines. When the camera detects the machine is being tampered with, pepper spray squirts at the criminal and the police are called! Now that’s the way to go!

We all should know by now that the dynamic component in pepper spray is oleoresin capsicum (OC), found in various types of hot peppers, to include cayenne peppers and other types of chili peppers. The capsaicin is accountable for the spicy sensation you receive while eating hot peppers. There isn’t any odor, it has no color, and flavorless, all it takes is one milligram (about 0.00003 ounces) of pure capsaicin and blistering forms on your skin.

Pepper spray is typically dispensed from in an aerosol form. This allows for spraying easier. Using an aerosol canister allows you to spray farther and in many instances wider than other forms of spray containers.

Three common spray patterns for pepper spray dispensing

• Stream -- A narrow stream of liquid is expelled. This concentrates the solution on the area being sprayed, added difficulty in aiming accurate.

• Mist -- A mist of fine liquid is sprayed. This allows the spray to cover a larger area and makes it easier to hit the target's face however this method will spray back in your face if you are not paying attention to the wind direction.

• Fog -- A fog has a wider range of spray.

Pepper sprays are approximately 4.5 inches tall and about 1.5 inches wide, they have a trigger to discharge the spray, and all come with a safety mechanism to prevent accidents. These pepper sprays are compact can be carried in a purse, pocket, just about anywhere on your person.

Pepper sprays can be easily concealed in a simple form as a lipstick, its effects will deter an attacker long enough for you to get to safety.
