In order to take full advantage of pepper spray's defending capability, one should consider taking a class from an expert user. There are right and wrong ways to administer pepper sprays. If you are planning on using pepper spray as a self defense tool you should know the proper way of handling it, this way you would have been up to speed on its usage, what it can and can’t do and how to handle yourself if in a bad situation where you have to spray an attacker.
Don’t ever pull your weapon on a potential attacker unless you plan on using it. That goes for any type or form of weaponry including hand guns. If you should have to use it, make sure when you aim at an assailant you immediately push on the trigger and spray it in the direction of their face. You also want to hopefully be in a position so that the pepper spray doesn’t blow back at you. The last thing you need at that time is to have been sprayed also. The pepper spray will depending on the type you choose, discharge in a stream, gel or foam. If you choose the stream pattern style while spraying directly into your components face, make sure you are waving it in a back and forth motion keeping as tight of pattern as you can. Make sure you spray until there isn’t anything left in the can and then take off and get to safety as fast as you can. You don’t want your attacker to have an opportunity to use the pepper spray back onto you.
Always have the safety latch in the off position while in spray mode. You don’t want to forget to take the safety latch off. You need to ensure that you are pointing the pepper spray in the right direction prior to spraying. If you aren’t holding the canister correctly you will spray yourself and this could be dreadful.
Carrying your pepper sprays with you at all times and knowing how to properly use it if need be will help you feel a sense of security you would not otherwise feel without your pepper spray.
