It is highly recommended when carrying self defense sprays you should carry the largest possible size that's practical and legal in your area. To give you an idea of sizing, the 2 oz. models are approximately 4" long by 1" diameter. This size model is compact enough to clip onto your purse or a belt. If this sizing isn't good for you then you should carry the key chain pepper spray model. By carrying this model you will mostly likely not forget to bring it with you as it's attached to your keys.
You should avoid carrying pepper sprays in your pant pockets; by placing it in your pocket you may not be able to get it out quickly enough therefore it won't do you any good. Attacks happen within seconds. Also carrying the pepper spray in your pocket only allows for forgetfulness in taking it with you the next time.
For women who are carrying pepper sprays, it's not wise to place it in your purse so it sits at the bottom and you have to dig for it. There will not be any time for digging. The smartest way to carry your self defense sprays is to clip it to the outside of your purse. This gives you quick access. If you prefer to clip it to the inside of your purse, do so on the upper inside pocket, divider or flap.
A great alternative to carrying a pocketbook is a fanny pack. You don't want to carry your pepper spray out in the open as you will lose the element of surprise. You always want to surprise the attacker and not let him know you are carrying a weapon.
If you prefer to carry the self defense sprays on your belt in a holster, remember to place it in the holster in the upside down position. By doing so when you take it out of the holster it will be in the proper position for spraying. Practicing with your draw is important as this takes a bit getting use to.
While carrying the pepper spray in the purse, you want to retain possession of the spray even if your purse is stolen. Make sure the pepper spray is positioned and clipped onto the purse in a manner that, when you have hold of it, any downward pull or yank of the purse will allow the pepper spray to come off and remain in your hand.
Anytime you are walking to your car, leaving a restaurant, shopping, jogging etc., alone you should have the pepper spray accessible and ready. Doesn't matter where it's attached on or in your purse or belt, or on a key chain; just have it ready to go. The time you may need to react to an attacker will be less than a few seconds.
Practice makes perfect. Rehearsing what to do in case you need to use the pepper spray will make you comfortable and more confident in your ability to use it. By practicing it could be the difference between becoming a victim and surviving an attack.
