Interesting History of Pepper Spray!

Brief History on the Origin of Pepper Spray
By Fabiola Castillo

The world can be a dangerous place. Most of the time that is not the case. You can walk down the street safely without worries, and probably have someone by your side just in case. However, for those rare times when it is dangerous, protection is handy to have around. Pepper spray as a compact, easily concealed protection device is ideal for just such situations. When going to buy pepper spray though, you might have questions as to its origins and actual usage.
Pepper spray, also known as OC spray (standing for oleoresin capsicum) is derived from a certain genus of plants known as Capsicum. The most commonly known of these is the chili pepper. Accordingly, the amount of Capsaicin in the spray is measured to give the pepper spray its hotness rating and thus effectiveness. These numbers range from lower numbers in use by police for crowd patrol to the industrial strength pepper spray used to subdue bears.
The process of grinding up peppers and using them to blind one's enemies has been happening since days of ancient China. Developed in the 1960s, pepper spray was first marketed under the name Halt Animal Repellent. Pepper spray, derived from the slew of tear gases, mustard gases, and hybrids used by the military and police forces of the world since the 19th century, was first used by the Postal Service in the 80's as a dog repellent.
For the rest of the decade, pepper spray was used mostly for animal repellent, soon adopted by hunters and forestry agents in case of a wild animal attack, as violent as a bear attack. Pepper spray's domestic use did not pick up until the early 1990s when more than 3000 police forces, driven by the endorsement by the FBI of pepper spray as a safe crowd deterrent, picked it up as a standard weapon in their arsenal.
Law enforcement's decision to pick up and use the substance led to the spread of it as a common self defense substance throughout the nation. Marketed in small, compact canisters, it became quite easy to buy pepper spray for use as a crime deterrent for the average man or woman on the street. Often concealed in a purse or something as small as a pendent or ring, pepper spray is a perfect self defense tool in that it will allow the incapacitation of a mugger or attacker for just long enough to run away. The inflammatory properties of pepper spray are perfectly suited to giving a victim enough time to escape.
Pepper spray, from its earliest inception has always been used and marketed as a repellent, a powerful and natural substance that will temporarily and without causing permanent harm, incapacitate a person or animal, long enough to get away from them, or for law enforcement to arrest them. Widely recognized as a first line of defense, pepper spray is a great choice for the regular citizen looking to protect themselves.

Can a TASER Device Kill?

Very Interesting Article on TASER!

Can a TASER Device Kill?
By Richard Armen

The question on everyone's mind as they consider buying a TASER device for personal protection is whether being shot with a TASER has the potential to kill a target. TASER devices employ an electric pulse, causing involuntary and instantaneous muscle contraction. Though the effects look ugly, in fact they cause few if any long-term health consequences.
TASER devices come in several voltage ratings. Operating on two nine volt batteries, most TASER units range between 65,000 and 500,000 volts. The higher the voltage, the more effective the TASER is at "stunning" or immobilizing an individual. At a higher voltage, some TASERS can immobilize an individual for up to fifteen minutes. Though these devices use a high voltage current, the amperage is low, which enables the device to incapacitate a target without causing permanent damage. Some, however, worry that this strong electrical current could cause permanent damage. Even if the target is a mugger or a burglar breaking in through a window, some worry about the potential for inflicting permanent damage on someone else while trying to protect themselves.
The good news is, TASER devices make effective and extremely safe self defense device. According to TASER International, the maker of these devices, TASER use is non-lethal. In fact, the company has funded numerous research studies to back up this claim. Though there are occasional news stories of a suspect dying after being hit with a TASER device wielded by a police officer, such stories are few and far between. In fact, when one considers the frequency of TASER use, this number is overwhelmingly small.
In fact, TASER devices are often employed as an alternative to lethal force. Particularly when carried by law enforcement officials, this device provides an alternative for pulling a gun on a suspect. They can also be used in situations where lethal force is not warranted.
Over the last decade or so, TASER devices have seen rapidly increasing use. Along with frequent use comes the possibility that some targets have preexisting health conditions which exacerbate the effects of the device. Debate remains regarding whether or not a Taser, alone, can cause death. The majority of research indicates that a simple TASER shot is not enough to cause death in most healthy individuals. Factors such as heart conditions or the use of alcohol or illegal drugs can affect how the TASER device affects the body. Some considerations may include the distance from the subject to the device, as well as the length of time the electrical probes remained in contact with the target's body. The specific location on the body at which the probes made contact has also been shown to affect the strength of the TASER's effect.
According to one report, which examined autopsy reports of individuals who died after being shocked with a TASER device, over fifty percent appeared to have preexisting cardiovascular disease. Eighty percent tested positive for illegal substances - primarily stimulants. Ultimately, the report concluded that the use of the TASER device was considered a potential or contributory cause for 27% of deaths, though preexisting heart conditions or substance use was primarily to blame in most cases. The report notes that these findings are consistent with prior studies. Among reported cases of death related to TASER use, heart conditions, use of amphetamines, alcohol abuse, or the presence of a pacemaker are key factors.

Self Defense Weapons - Product Reviews
By Jack Krohn

Self defense weapons have been used by law enforcement and military units for decades. They are a non-lethal alternative to deadly force. Military units use pepper spray for crowd control. Next time you see a police officer ask him why he carries a stun device and a pepper spray. He will tell you because they are both very effective.
The same holds true for civilian use. That is why civilians have taken self defense weapons very aggressively. They provide civilians with an inexpensive, nonlethal alternative to firearms that are very effective. Their purpose of course is to provide you time in an emergency to get away from an assailant.
Stun devices-use high-voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for up to 10 minutes. Electricity stored in a gun when applied to an assailant causes the muscles to do a great deal of work rapidly. This depletes the attacker's blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In other words he can't produce energy for his muscles and is unable to function properly. He loses his balance and becomes disoriented.
Pepper sprays-use a 10 percent concentration of oleoresin capsicum otherwise known as OC spray. Defensive sprays swell the mucous membranes which makes breathing difficult, causes choking, swells the veins in the eyes which actually causes the eyes to close and causes choking. There is one other thing I almost forgot-they cause a great deal of pain. It is the pain it produces the language that you may not be accustomed to hearing from the assailant.
When it comes to your self defense nonlethal self defense weapons provide many choices of color, size price and methodology. The one thing that they all share in common is that they all work. When are you getting one?

Pepper Spray Protection

I came across this article on Pepper Spray Protection and thought it would be very useful to you.

Pepper Spray Protection

By Nicole Roberts

Today's woman has to be independent in every way. One of the many ways that she has to become independent is with her self protection and defense. Women are constantly in positions of being vulnerable for attack. They go shopping alone. They go to the office, and they come home alone. They will find that they will find themselves in parking lots, or at traffic lights, or in a variety of situation that will make them a seeming target for criminals and thugs that want to attack them. This is tragic that this happens, but it's always a good idea for a woman to feel like she can do what she needs to do in the world, and that she can protect herself.
There are a variety of ways for women to protect themselves from criminals and thugs. A woman can take a self-defense class. Or she can carry around weapons. There are lethal weapons such as guns. However, many women shy away from guns. Guns are still thought of as a man's weapon of choice, and women are more reticent to live with the consequences of using a gun. Or, male or female, many people don't agree with the use of lethal force to subdue an attacker. They will want to use a product that will stop the attacker from harming them, yet that won't kill the attacker.
One such non-lethal weapon is pepper spray. Pepper spray protection involves carrying a canister of a spray with the main potent ingredient of oleoresin capsicum. This is otherwise known as OC, and this naturally produced chemical is from cayenne peppers. If anyone has had experience eating foods with cayenne peppers, then they can attest to the heat level and the discomfort that this chemical can cause on a much smaller scale. Pepper spray is a very concentrated amount of OC that is going to be sprayed in the face of the attacker.
What this will do is stun the attacker in several ways. First, the chemical in pepper spray burns the skin. If this is being sprayed in sensitive areas like the eyes or the mucous membranes of the nose and the mouth, then this will burn like acid eating away at their flesh. Second, OC causes inflammation. The assailant won't be able to experience normal breathing. The attacker won't die, but breathing will be very labor intensive for them. They will tear up, and their nose will run. The great thing about pepper spray protection is that because of the intense burning pain that it causes, it will be affective on anyone that gets sprayed with it.
Pepper spray protection is legal in all states, and is usually contained in canisters. The canisters are small, and are usually either sold as key chains, or can be carried in canister holders that are attached to belts. This is so that the attack victim can reach right down to the waistline, and pull out the canister. Most canisters will propel the spray at nice distances, and will propel the pepper spray very forcefully. This is so that the attack victim can pepper spray the attacker, and get away quickly.

Self Defense Sprays different types

Different Self Defense Sprays types and how they should be used.

Broken-Stream: The broken-stream self defense sprays are great options for those of you with a less accurate aim! It is an excellent choice in a multiple attack situation. The broken-stream type self defense sprays is your best option in dark and small areas. This type pepper spray pattern is comparable to the spray pattern of a water gun, less chance for error. While spraying you should use what we call a fan motion, while spraying moving it side to side for better accuracy in hitting your attacker. Keep in mind that the broken-stream type canister has the most blast and the can will deplete quickly. Using broken-steam pepper sprays will create the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing.

Foam: To avoid blowback you might want to use the foam pattern. Foam self defense sprays do not have blowback no matter what the wind condition is. The foam spray option is best for instant infiltration. Once the foam hits the attacker, it cannot be wiped off without causing symptoms. With 5.3 million Scoville Heat Units of peppers and sticky thick foam which mimics shaving cream, once on the attacker the foam will cause the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing. It is similar to a thick and sticky shaving cream with 5.3 million Scoville Heat Units of hot pepper. The pepper works instantly, so when the attacker tries to wipe it off, it will only make the situation worse for them. Again, the foam causes the eyes to tear, the nose to run, excessive coughing and shortness of breath.

Fogger: The fogger is a great tool for crowd control, hunting in the event you run into a bear, multiple attackers and at home. Fogger pattern does however, have a drawback, it can potentially blow back and contaminate you while spraying. If you are spraying this pattern outside the blow back is a great possibility. The assailant would be getting the most damage of the spray and pain than you would receive. To operate fogger pattern, you need to pull the trigger and use the fan method moving it back and forth as you spray. Pepper Fogger has an immediate affect and causes the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing.

Forced Cone: The forced cone self defense sprays is the majority in popularity. It is in general the greatest option in common pepper spray usage. The forced cone provides a fine mist to facilitate a powerful spray pattern. The forced cone pattern will allow a spray distance of 8 to 12 feet, with a 2 foot measurement across. The mist is made up of exceptionally fine droplets of a pepper mixture that in fact lends a hand in reducing the risk of the pepper formula coming back onto the person who is using the self defense sprays. Using the forced cone self defense sprays will create the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing.

In the end self defense sprays, all these types will do the job and create suffering on your attacker allowing you to get to safety!

How do you choose a Self Defense Weapon?

Choosing self defense weapons is not an easy task.  With so many different types of self defense weapons on the market today how do you know what or what not to buy?

Pepper sprays are a great option and will work immediately on your attacker without having to have contact with your would-be attacker.  Some pepper sprays will also give you a safe distance of up to 25 feet away!

You must be cautious with pepper sprays and what direction the wind is blowing as it can very well come right back into your face.

Stun guns on the other hand do require you to have contact with your attacker as you will need to stun your assailant to bring him down.  With stun guns, the higher the voltage the less contact time you will need to take your attacker.  While shopping for stun guns keep this in mind.

TASER allows up to 15 feet of distance between you and your attacker.  But at these lengths how do you really know you are potentially going to be attacked or not?  TASER is a wonderful product and out of all is also the most expensive.  You will also need to buy replacement cartridges, which I recommend keeping an extra one on hand at all times.

Keeping in close touch with your surroundings will help you in determining if a person is a potential attacker or just someone walking on by.  This is very important no matter which self defense weapons you choose to purchase.

It's about paying attention, setting yourself up for the potential attack and being in ready mode in the event it turns into an altercation.

All these self defense weapons will help protect you.  Which one you should choose really depends on how you feel about the different types of self defense weapons, how you would like to carry it and whether or not you don't mind having close contact in order to take the person down.

In the end it's all about you protecting you.  It's most likely that if you should become a victim there might not be anyone around to help you.  Get the protection you need today.

Self Defense Sprays Get Yours Today!

In the world of Self Defense Weapons – Self Defense Sprays are the most popular and rightfully so! In just the last couple of years self defense sprays have become the number one choice in self protection. Commonly known brands are Mace, Pepper Shot and Wildfire.

Scoville Heat Units (SHU) which is how the pepper sprays hotness is rated has been around since 1912. Now that’s many years of determining pepper plants Oleoresin Capsicum! Pepper sprays overall effectiveness depends on the Scoville Heat Units. Self Defense Sprays have to be at 2 million SHU in order for them to properly work on your attacker.

Oleoresin Capsicum when you come in contact with it products the eyes to tear profusely, possible temporary blindness, massive coughing and difficulty breathing. Self Defense Sprays will take your attacker down. Self Defense Sprays are tremendously competent even if a person has drug or alcohol consumption. Some other types of self defense devices will not be effective with drug or alcohol usage. Self Defense Sprays come in different strengths, usually between 10% and 18%. This is definitely enough to warrant someone who has been sprayed to feel the hurting affects and will last up to 45 minutes.

The Oleoresin Capsicum is derived from oil and doesn’t mix very well with water. The last thing you want to do if sprayed is just let the eyes naturally tear to cleanse it out. Do not touch the affected area with your hands and then touch yourself elsewhere as it will end up all over you. If you should get it onto other parts of the body you will feel burning sensations and could lead to blisters, this can last for hours.

Self Defense Sprays come in a large variety of styles, from what looks like an ordinary pen to a compact lipstick you can easily carry in your purse or pocket, a ring that you wear and by the way it looks great, to one pound canisters for the home. Self Defense Sprays have a shelf life of approximately 3 to 4 years. Make sure you check your pepper spray regularly to make sure there isn’t any leakage and keep within the expiration as if you should need to use it the pepper spray might have lost its potency.

If you haven’t tried Self Defense Sprays you should get yours today!

Personal Alarms, Pepper sprays, Stun Guns, TASER - Which One!

Self defense weapons have pretty much become a necessity today. With sexual assaults, robberies, home invasions, date rapes happening all around us at an alarming rate, the question now is not whether or not you want to take a stand and defend yourself, your loved ones and your home, it’s now a matter of what tool will fit my defense needs.
If you are wondering which self defense weapon is good for you, here’s some helpful information so you can make a better decision in purchasing your defense device.

Self Defense Weapons come in many varieties, forms, styles and price ranges.

Personal Alarms are meant to be heard. These compact self defense weapons do not get enough credit. They come in different styles and can be carried on your person or as a keychain. A few models act as a window/door alarm also! Most alarms have a 100 to 130 decibel sounding alarm which in some cases can be heard up to a ½ mile away depending on the noise level of the area you sound the alarm at. These devices are great for small children and elderly adults who cannot or do not want to carry a more elaborate self defense weapon.
Pepper sprays are a small wonder. Come in a large array of styles, you can opt for the concealed Lipstick pepper spray to carry in your purse or pocket, a keychain style which I personally like as it is always readily available, to a one pound canister for your home. They provide instant protection causing burning, pain, temporary blindness, choking and coughing to your victim. These symptoms will last up to 45 minutes which gives you plenty of time to get away to safety.
Stun Guns do require contact. Stun guns will take an attacker down to his knees! The higher the voltage the less contact time you will need. These smart devices can be purchased as cell phones, lipsticks, jogging weights, and traditional stun gun styling, all of which will take your assailant down. The voltages usually range from 50,000 volts to 4.5 million volts! This type of self defense weapon is not for all; remember you need to have full contact with your attacker in order for these to obviously take affect.
TASER® the ultimate in defense. TASER® International has 3 models for you to choose from. The C2 which is modeled for civilian use, they are small and easily carried. The M26C is usually used by security officers and business owners, they are bulky and as the batteries drain so does the power. The X26C is primarily used by business owners, security professionals and bail bondsmen and has the best technology out of all 3 guns. At 50,000 volts of power and the fact that you can be within 15 feet of your attacker makes these devices very attractive.

Whichever self defense weapon you choose, anyone of them will help defend you in the event you are attacked.

Less-lethal Self Defense Weapons Versus Lethal Weaponry

Using Less-lethal self defense weapons is much easier to handle and doesn’t necessitate any form of professional training prior to use. Less-lethal self defense weapons are a very affordable option versus using say a handgun. Handguns are much more expensive, require training, licensure and are a very lethal means of self protection.

Prior to considering which form of self defense weapon you want to carry, check with your local and state laws to see which self defense weapons are allowed in your state. If you do choose to carry a firearm, the licensing process is very lengthy and costly and you will forego an investigation.

Less-lethal self defense weapons other than the TASER® do not require any formal investigations, are less costly and will provide you and your loved ones with much needed protection without possibly doing deadly harm to anyone. As with any form of protection devices whether it is a pepper spray, stun gun, TASER® or handgun, it is suggested that you carry out practices hitting your object. In the event you should have to use your weapon, you want to ensure you will know how to use it prior to a potential situation.

TASER® devices do require you to have a background check. If you are considering purchasing one make sure you are capable of passing this background check as the TASER® device will not turn on until you go through the process. It usually can be done by calling TASER® International or by going on their website. You should be able to have your device working within a half hour.

Self defense weapons should be used with caution and great care. Take into consideration that while carrying your self defense weapon pay close attention as the weapon can be taken and used against you.

Pepper Sprays are the bomb Protection Device!

Crime rates are jumping through the roof nowadays and regrettably mostly amongst women. In these unfortunate times with the unemployment rates the highest they have been in many years, along comes a higher rate of criminal activity. Women today are at an escalated danger of attack and robberies. It is distressing that women cannot be at ease without having to carry some type of protection device on their person as well as secure their apartments/homes.

Self defense weapons, personal alarms and home security alarms can help give you a sense of protection. These devices can and will help aid you in defending yourself if you should need to.

Pepper sprays are great devices and work immediately on the assailant upon spraying them in the face. It will incapacitate the attacker to the degree his or her eyes will instantly start tearing, the nose, throat and lungs will become inflamed and cause difficulty in breathing and temporary blindness will occur. With all these hurting factors going on with the would-be attacker, he or she won’t have any other thoughts but to rid themselves of the pain they are feeling. This pain will continue for up to 45 minutes or longer.

While you have taken down your attacker with this wonder device called pepper spray you can get yourself to safety, preferably to the police department so you can report the incident and possibly catch the criminal while he or she is still trying to fare off what you have done to them!

Pepper sprays have been in motion for many years now. They were and still are widely used by law enforcement agencies and military personnel. The soldiers actually use self defense weapons in training. It is required they train with these wonder devices. Manufacturers have for only a short period of time now been allowed to market pepper sprays for individual use. This is a great accomplishment for you and me!

We can now defend ourselves without doing permanent harm to anybody; puts them out of commission for a while, allow you to get to safety, and no one had to die.

Now in my opinion that’s worth having it for!
