According to one report, which examined autopsy reports of individuals who died after being shocked with a TASER device, over fifty percent appeared to have preexisting cardiovascular disease. Eighty percent tested positive for illegal substances - primarily stimulants. Ultimately, the report concluded that the use of the TASER device was considered a potential or contributory cause for 27% of deaths, though preexisting heart conditions or substance use was primarily to blame in most cases. The report notes that these findings are consistent with prior studies. Among reported cases of death related to TASER use, heart conditions, use of amphetamines, alcohol abuse, or the presence of a pacemaker are key factors.

Or, male or female, many people don't agree with the use of lethal force to subdue an attacker. What this will do is stun the attacker in several ways. First, the chemical in pepper spray burns the skin. If this is being sprayed in sensitive areas like the eyes or the mucous membranes of the nose and the mouth, then this will burn like acid eating away at their flesh. Second, OC causes inflammation. The assailant won't be able to experience normal breathing. The attacker won't die, but breathing will be very labor intensive for them. They will tear up, and their nose will run. The great thing about pepper spray protection is that because of the intense burning pain that it causes, it will be affective on anyone that gets sprayed with it.
Pepper spray protection is legal in all states, and is usually contained in canisters. The canisters are small, and are usually either sold as key chains, or can be carried in canister holders that are attached to belts. This is so that the attack victim can reach right down to the waistline, and pull out the canister. Most canisters will propel the spray at nice distances, and will propel the pepper spray very forcefully. This is so that the attack victim can pepper spray the attacker, and get away quickly.

Fogger pattern does however, have a drawback, it can potentially blow back and contaminate you while spraying. If you are spraying this pattern outside the blow back is a great possibility. The assailant would be getting the most damage of the spray and pain than you would receive. To operate fogger pattern, you need to pull the trigger and use the fan method moving it back and forth as you spray. Pepper Fogger has an immediate affect and causes the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing.

Forced Cone: The forced cone self defense sprays is the majority in popularity. It is in general the greatest option in common pepper spray usage. The forced cone provides a fine mist to facilitate a powerful spray pattern. The forced cone pattern will allow a spray distance of 8 to 12 feet, with a 2 foot measurement across. The mist is made up of exceptionally fine droplets of a pepper mixture that in fact lends a hand in reducing the risk of the pepper formula coming back onto the person who is using the self defense sprays. Using the forced cone self defense sprays will create the eyes to tear, the nose to run, extreme coughing and difficulty breathing.

There isn’t any odor, it has no color, and flavorless, all it takes is one milligram (about 0.00003 ounces) of pure capsaicin and blistering forms on your skin.

Pepper spray is typically dispensed from in an aerosol form. This allows for spraying easier. Using an aerosol canister allows you to spray farther and in many instances wider than other forms of spray containers.

Three common spray patterns for pepper spray dispensing

The Working of Pepper Sprays

Holding a pepper in your hand doesn’t feel any different than holding a piece of fruit, right? Now take that same pepper and put it to your lips or on your tongue, you will feel the heat!

The capsaicin in a pepper reacts with the nerve endings in your mucous membranes that are responsive to heat and cold. That is why your mouth will burn when eating a spicy pepper.

Capsaicin is the same component that makes peppers seem hot, its effectiveness is calculated in Scoville heat units (SHU) a heat scale that is used to figure the heat intensity of peppers. The whole heat level is derived on the quantity of capsaicin exists. On average pepper spray is rated between 500,000 and 5,000,000 SHU. To give a comparison, a Jalapeno pepper is approximately 8,000 SHU. Other types of hot peppers rate close to 350,000 SHU.

The harshness effects of pepper sprays will vary depending on the quantity of pepper spray that is used, the potency of the spray and where it's sprayed. If sprayed precisely into someone’s face, the effects will probably be more powerful and/or longer-lasting.

A person who is sprayed in the face with pepper sprays, would instantly feel burning in the eyes, nose and mouth, and perhaps in the throat and on the skin area. The burning sensation can last anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes if it isn’t treated right away. The eyes will become aggravated and most likely will swell shut, temporary blindness that can last 15 to 30 minutes. Coughing and difficulty breathing as your throat swells might also occur and can last from 3 to 15 minutes.

Pepper Spray Treatment - Oil and Water do not Mix!

Pepper sprays are made up of Oleoresin capsicum and Oleoresin capsicum is oil based. As we all should know oil and water do not mix very well. Imagine how complicated it is to cleanse grease off of a cooking pot with water alone, it's nearly unfeasible. Water is made up of polar molecules and grease is made up of non polar molecules. Polar molecules just connect with other polar molecules, and non polar molecules only connect with other non polar molecules. As we have all tried, using water will not wash that greasy pan! The water will never bond with the grease and transmit it down the drain.

Just like grease, oleoresin capsicum oil is made of non polar molecules, while drinking water or splashing your face in it may provide immediate relief it will not take the oil or offer any permanent relief. What should you do if you are sprayed with pepper spray?

Very significant, DO NOT touch the affected area. Pepper spray is oil-based and can simply expand to other portions of the body just by touching it.

Blink briskly to produce tearing in your eyes. This could help relieve some of the pepper spray from your eyes.

Use cleansing as hand soaps, shampoo, dish soaps then rinse with water. Soaps help break up and take away the oil while water cannot.

Use a baby shampoo to help rinse the pepper spray from the eye area. Just like soap, this will help remove the oils, it can be used on sensitive areas without causing more irritation.

Emergency medical personnel usually have some form of wipes or solution to help treat the effects of pepper spray. If you carry pepper spray, it is probably a good idea to have medicated wipes that are designed to cleanse your skin if it's been exposed to pepper spray.

These wipes can prove very useful in case you are accidentally sprayed.
