Defensive sprays swell the mucous membranes which makes breathing difficult, causes choking, swells the veins in the eyes which actually causes the eyes to close and causes choking. There is one other thing I almost forgot-they cause a great deal of pain. It is the pain it produces the language that you may not be accustomed to hearing from the assailant.
